Shopping in the Lecrín Valley, Granada – The Butcher

Shopping on holiday, where to go

You may or may not like to do some cooking whilst on holiday, after all it’s up to you. That’s what I like about self catering, the flexibility. In the Lecrín Valley, you can quite happily eat out each day during your stay but that can get monotonous. Shopping locally can be fun and a good way to discover local customs too. So we’d like to suggest an excellent butcher.

Chacinería Terrón in Talará, just 10 minutes from Casa Tagomago makes for a great shopping experience. Much of the meat they sell is of their own production so fresh is fresh! They also cure their own serrano hams. Their delicatessen counter offers quite a few local products including their ham. Vacuum packed, it makes a great souvenir of your holiday!

Even more local than this butcher are the two small supermarkets in Restábal. Both sell meat, chicken, different cuts of pork and some beef. In Pinos del Valle, Carnicería David has a good choice of local meat, some of his own produce too. To my way of thinking, David’s ”longaniza”, a sausage a bit like chorizo, delicious fried and his “morcilla”, similar to black pudding, are the best for many miles around. Luckily, María Jesús sells both these sausages in her supermarket in Restábal. For a real treat, try them on the BBQ with a glass of Arrendajo red, produced in Restábal by Vinos Alto Valle.

Talking of wine, we love this philosphical prose spied on the delicatessen counter at Chacinería Terrón. Loosely translated it states:-

The psalms in the Bible tell us how wine fills man’s heart with joy. Cervantes said that wine drunk in moderation never harmed anyone. For these reasons, I recommend prudence and moderation, because, as Apuleyo wisely said the first glass is for thirst, the second for joy, the third for pleasure and the fourth is stupidity.

In Dúrcal you’ll find more butcher’s and all the supermarkets have meat counters. For more shopping ideas take a look at this post we wrote a few months ago: Lecrín Valley Shopping, a Bakery   Happy shopping!

The Lecrín Valley is situated halfway between Granda and the Costa Tropical in Andalucía, southern Spain.
