How to Get to Granada, Spain

How to Travel to Granada and the Lecrín Valley

The Lecrín Valley is located halfway between Granada and the Costa Tropical. Easily reached from both Granada and Malaga, in this post we offer you travel information and useful links.

The nearest airport to Casa Tagomago is the Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaen airport just 45 minutes from Restábal. This is a very small airport, receiving only a few flights from outside of Spain. Things are improving though and Easyjet now flies direct to Granada from London Gatwick, Manchester, Milan Malpensa, Napoles and Berlin Tegel. From September 2019 they are adding Bordeaux to the list. British Airways flies from London City. Vueling flies direct from Paris and has multiple connecting flights to other national and European destinations. This is the link to the map shown below

On the other hand, Malaga airport receives flights from several Spanish airports, from all over Europe as well as connections with intercontinental flights. With the new coastal motorway, the A-7,  the journey from Malaga airport to Casa Tagomago is now only about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Click here to go to Google Maps

We recommend you take this coastal route from Malaga Airport to Restábal. Not only does it use the new A-7 motorway, which has far less traffic than the A-92 route, but it is also a really pleasant and scenic route.

For those of you who prefer a train journey, this is once more an option after more than ten years of technical delays and cutbacks, not to mention some political wrangling! The AVE, Spain’s High-Speed Railway, now connects Granada to Madrid and Barcelona as well as Cordoba and Zaragoza. Other connections are possible from stations on these main routes. Car Hire

Whichever route you choose to get to Granada, a car is essential in the Lecrín Valley. As we quite often have to rent a car at the airport, we would like to suggest these two car-hire companies to our guests.
Hire a car direct with this independent company at Malaga airport. Good service and reasonable prices. If you book your holiday at Casa Tagomago we can give you a discount code for hiring your car with Please note that the code is not available on all car categories nor at all times of the year.
Find good rates for car hire in Spain with Hispacar, a price comparison website with lots of search filters to make it really easy to find the most suitable rental vehicle for you. We can recommend this site for hiring at Granada airport.

Travel Safe for a Carefree Holiday

I’m sure you will have already found your ideal travel insurance to cover your holiday. However, I doubt it will include the Excess on you car rental. With more and more car hire companies charging hefty insurance to cover Excess we would like to suggest you consider the option of taking out an Excess Insurance. In the event of having to pay for damages, the insurance company will reimburse you. We have been doing this for several years and find it an excellent way to go. So far we have only had to make a claim on one occasion for a small amount but our chosen company was professional and helpful. There are several UK based companies offering this insurance to UK and European residents.

If you opt for this insurance, always remember to get the rental company to give you clear indications of any existing damage to the car before you drive away. Take your own photos as well. Not all companies are that fussy but it’s worth 10 minutes of your time. The other thing is to always make sure that you have enough credit on your card for the excess that the company will block. Always check that this is what they do and that they don’t actually charge the excess. For any more tips on car hire please do get in touch with us, we’re old hands at it!
