A Recommended Day Trip – Motril, Granada

Visit the Town of Motril, Granada

Granada’s Costa Tropical and the town of Motríl are just 25 minutes from Restábal. Motríl is not exactly a seaside town as it is situated a little way inland but it boasts some attractive beaches and an important fishing port nearby.

Shopping in Motril

A visit to the town itself makes for a pleasant and even surprising outing. The largest town on the Tropical Coast with about 61,000 inhabitants, it’s a good place for a spot of shopping. Take a look at the fresh fish on sale in the municipal market, wander round the narrow streets with their small, independent shops and browse the goods of some well known, franchise names. On Tuesdays and Fridays discover the hustle and bustle of the mercadillo. This traditional street market sells all kinds of ware from clothes to household. But the selection of fresh local fruits and vegetables is frankly mind boggling. You’ll find it hard to believe how low the prices are!

What to See

We particularly like the Pueblos de las Americas Park (Peoples of America) situated at the foot of the Santa Maria de la Cabeza Sanctuary. This impressive church, dedicated to Motril’s patron saint, sits on a hill in the centre of the town. The surrounding park is planted with trees and bushes from all over north and south America, as well as some other exotic species. Most of the trees and bushes are named. The lawns sloping down to the lake, numerous benches, a playground, skateboard rink and go-kart circuit, as well as the band stand, all attract visitors to enjoy the activities and the shade of this attractive park.

Where to Eat

In true Spanish style, restaurants and bars abound, some well established and typical, others of modern design with attractive terraces. A short drive to the beach, Playa Granada, takes you to the more touristy area. Here you’ll find some excellent fish restaurants, we had a marvellous meal at Restaurante Juan García on Camino del Pelaíllo, 25, 18613 Motril, Granada.

Not Just Beaches

Apart from the beaches, I’m sure you’d love to visit the small, coastal wetlands, La Charca de Suarez. Not far fom the restaurants, this makes for a fascinating afternoon stroll. The lagoons are mainly populated by a large amount of seabirds. Most are easy to watch from the hides on each lagoon. Open in the afternoons, Monday to Friday, Saturday and Sunday by appointment. Entrance is free. Check the timetables here. Or on +34 651 819 134. There are some information leaflets at Casa Tagomago.

For golf enthusiasts there’s an 18 hole Links Course, Los Moriscos, in the same area.

We had a truly enjoyable day, I’m sure you will too.
