Walking in the Lecrín Valley, Granada, Spain

Lecrín Valley Villages – Saleres to Albuñuelas

Let’s go to Albuñuelas, you’ll love walking this route along the side of the spectacular gorge that’s the location of this sprawling village.

How to Get There

Take the car to Saleres and park near the Fuente de los Caños, turn down to your left until you get to the river, walk along the right bank, on the edge of the village, until you get to a fork, take the right hand, concrete road up and out of Saleres. This is part of the GR7/E4 long distance walking route, marked by red and white horizontal lines on walls or wooden posts making the walk very easy to follow.

Walking from Saleres to Albuñuelas

The road has recently been improved along the whole length of the route, mainly for the farmers’ ease of access to their land but also providing a wide, pleasant track for walkers.

The Barrio Alto or Upper Quarter of Albuñuelas

On your way, due to the steady ascent, you’ll be able to get some good shots of Saleres and a bit further on, looking back, more of Restábal. It is a joy to be walking through olive and orange groves with the wonderful backdrop of the gorge of Albuñuelas always visible through the trees. The Acequia (irrigation channel) del Mojón runs under and beside the road, accompanying you with its refreshing sound.

Your arrival in Albuñuelas itself is into the lower quarter, or barrio, of the village at a spot where the noise from the acequia can be quite deafening at times! Climb up through the charming narrow streets, enjoying the colour of roses, geraniums and bougainvillea and along the Calle Carretera towards the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (town hall) for a well-deserved beer before returning along the same route.

You can also  start this walk from Restábal. Follow the wooden signpost on the corner of the street to the left of the telephone box on Calle Carretera. This takes you through the upper barrio of Restábal down the other side of the village and up into Saleres, about half an hour with some steep climbs in places. Cross the river and turn left along the right bank to continue as above.

More information on the two routes in Wikiloc. This one is longer as it goes right through Albuñuelas but gives you a very clear idea of the route itself:-  the route on WikilocWe did the route again recently, and it took us about an hour one way. Don’t forget a hat and water, the path is in the morning sun for most of the way.

Happy walking!
